Breeding

The Key Performance Indicators that influence the profitability of the sow are:

  • Number of healthy weaners
  • Piglet birth/weaning weight (milk yield/composition)
  • Sow body condition (returns and number born alive)
  • Sow return to service/strong heats (empty days/returns)
  • Number of sows reaching parity 6 and greater (herd profile and culling)
  • Boar sperm count and motility

In comparison with 20 years ago, today's breeding sow has a very different body composition. Unless recognised and accounted for, there can be a significant impact on the sow's lifetime performance.

To maximise sow and gilt performance Optivite have developed new strategies for diet specification and feeding programs. New thinking in breeding sow feeding is incorporated in our Vitamin Mineral Premixes.

The increasingly important microbial impact of bacterial challenge on breeding performance can be addressed by using Optivite's antimicrobial products Genex Sow and Salgard. The negative effects of moulds and mycotoxins on sow production and breeding feeds can be reduced through the use of Moldgard and Mycobond.

Optomega for Pigs omega-3 fatty acid supplement has been shown to improve fertility in the sow (fertility and fecundity) and boar (sperm count).
